Day 22: 88 Temples (none) - Sukumo

Dawn from my window was pretty nice.  I had a great breakfast.  The raw egg had been cooked for me - they had asked at check in and must realize most foreigners aren't into the raw breakfast egg.

I had a very late start at 10am but for a short day of only 18km it's better than waiting around for hotel check-in time.  Tonight's hotel had an unusually early 2pm checkin.  Most are 3 or 4pm and finding places to wait around can be hard.

The walk was nice.  It started out in the hills and there were some long ups and downs before I rejoined the main route again. The road signs call it Route 321 and on Google Maps it is called Sunny Road.  Whatever it is called I have been on it most of the last 5 days.  It's been pretty good for walking as most of it has a segregated sidewalk.  It also has a bus, which is good for us cheaters.

When I was off Route 321 I noticed boats in the bush. This was at elevation of 80 meters and far from the water.  They were hard to see under all the foliage but without really looking I saw about a dozen.  My best guess is that they used to be weekend fishing boats that were stored just off the road.  The owners must have gotten too old to take them out anymore and they got forgotten and the forest claimed them.

Once I was on Route 321 there was a gentle downhill grade until I reached the coast.  I made a stop at Lawson conbini for some chicken nuggets, a little sandwich and a latte.  In places I was able to get off 321 and walk on parallel residential roads.  These were probably the main road at one time.  Even though it was still only 50m from the traffic, it was a nice break.

I reached Sukumo and my hotel about 2 and checked in.  Unfortunately, I have a Smoking room and it does have that stench.  After laundry and shower I had an afternoon of YouTube.

For dinner I made a big effort and went all the way across the parking lot.  Huge meal ... sleepy now.
