Day 42: 88 Temples (71-75) - Marugame

Temples, temples, so many temples. On days with lots of temples everything gets all mashed together in your memory.

We did a small cheat to start the day by walking back to Kan-Onji Station and taking the train 3 stops to Takase Station.  It was close to the Henro route and shaved off about 5km on the day.  It also bypassed some of the more urban heavy traffic areas.

At Temple 71 we were bad gaijin and got yelled at for having shoes on in the area you store your shoes.  The office was in the Kobo Temple and was a no shoes zone.  71 had a lot of steps.  It was a multi-level kind of temple.

Out of Temple 71 was a nice trail through bamboo forests. Throughout the day starting at 71 there was an older couple - some sort of European, probably - we passed at every temple.  We also saw our Taiwan friend Leo and snowy Henro hut guy at almost every temple.

Temple 72 was up a bit of a hill and it started raining.  We waited out the worst of it under a large camphor tree. It truns out they produce the little beans I have been using to play my bean game.  I play when walking gets hard and I see the little beans on the road.  It's a simple game; I try the smash the beans with the end of my staff.  The bean game stops your feet from hurting.

Temple 72 and 73 were close.  73 had some nice views.

Temple 74 was a quaint little temple.  Basic but kind of nice.

Temple 75 was a big time temple.  The Temple was huge.  The entire area was named for it, including the train station 2km away.

Our walk ended at the station.  There we took the 3:19 train to Marugame and we're in our rooms by 4:00.  Since we had to wait for the train we had a beer in the station.  We used the Onsen while our clothes washed and since we had to wait we had another beer.

Dinner was in a restaurant Mike described as a "fried things on a stick" place.  Can't go wrong with that.
